Abby Bloom of Recovre Limited won the 2007 Inspiring Woman of Australia award, presented by the Australian Businesswomen’s Network.
Her passion is for enabling wider access to quality health care in Australia and in poorer nations and mentoring talented young women to achieve personal and career satisfaction where just two of the reasons this business dynamo was added to our list of outstanding women to be celebrated.
Abby Bloom is an incredibly successful businesswoman who has set-up and is on the Board of several highly innovative businesses (as listed below) that are developing new medical devices or delivering health services:
- Recovre Pty and Recovre Holdings: Recovre is Australia’s third largest injury management company, with 23 offices and 240 employees,
- Columna Pty Ltd: Columna has developed the first minimally-invasive spinal disc implant to cure back pain; the first implant was done in December 2007
- Acu Rate Pty Ltd: CEO - Acu Rate has developed a flow control technology that replaces electric pumps used for “IV”, reducing the cost of this therapy to a few cents, and making this vital for therapy accessible to millions in poorer countries.
- Bivascular Pty Ltd: Bivascular has invented 2 novel types of stents for preventing brain aneurysms by “arthroplasty” (similar to heart stents, but only recently available in Australia).
Somehow she also manages to squeeze in an academic career as Adjunct Professor at the University of Sydney, Australian Health Policy Institute.
Abby has a whole string of achievements on the academic side as well as on the business side. Additionally she actively serves as a mentor to young women.
Previously Abby had been a high-level advisor on healthcare issues to organisations such as the World Bank and to national and international governments. She has published widely and is regarded as an authority in her field of research and expertise.
Most of her professional achievements can be summarised with “one of the first, or “one of the few women who…”
Her passions are for enabling wider access to quality health care in Australia and in poorer nations; family; mentoring talented young women to achieve personal and career satisfaction; community; growing Australia’s medical device industry and writing, publishing and speaking to influence government health policies internationally and to promote women’s heart health.
What sets Abby apart from many other successful women, is that Abby is very inspiring in the way she actively, and in a very caring way supports younger women.
She is a very humble and down-to-earth person, who would not even consider applying for an award herself. She has a great sense of humour, has a talent for telling fascinating stories (true ones that is), and is easy-going and fun to be with.
Abby is married and a mum of two wonderful daughters. She loves sports and sometimes one can see her jogging with her dogs, or kayaking in Sydney Harbour.
