Some of the most successful companies in the world grew from humble beginnings with little to no startup capital. Steve Jobs built the first Apple computer in his family's garage. Apple Inc. now has an annual revenue of over $30 billion and was recently named the most admired company in the world by Fortune magazine. Steve Jobs didn't have a fortune when he created the first Apple computer - but he did have an inspired vision.
Growing a business - starting something from nothing - requires focused vision, extensive planning, hard work and a substantial investment of your time.
"Going into business was something I had envisaged for a long time," says Anne Sorensen, marketing strategy specialist and founder of Marketing Is Us. "It seemed a natural evolution - the next step - after 20+ years in corporate life. I always wanted to create something of my own. It has been amazing to start something from nothing and watch it grow. I've learned so much along the way and the learning continues. It's fantastic!"
But growing something from nothing is not an easy task. As Anne says, it requires "laser-focus." She was able to focus her vision with the help of the Australian Businesswomen's Network (ABN).
"The main challenges for me were focus and time management," says Anne. "There was (and is) always so much to do and with lean resources, I had to be laser-focused with my time and priorities. Hearing other businesswomen's stories via ABN webinars and forums provided me with the reminders, inspiration and support I needed to remain focused and resilient. I saw that I was not alone and that my challenges were shared by others."
ABN not only provides business training but also connects like-minded Australian businesswomen so that they can help each other overcome the challenges of managing and growing a business.
