The Mentoree: Catherine Westwood, Chik

Why did you become a mentoree?

I was in the very early start up phase of my business and feeling somewhat lost in the process of where to direct my time and priorities. I had heard of business mentors before, but found the cost to have a one on one business coach prohibitive. The MentorNet program through ABN was a perfect solution to this whilst giving me access to a much wider network of successful women in business to draw from their experiences.

What were you hoping to get from the experience?

I was hoping to get a better sense of a business' structure, gain guidance and support to make those all important 'business building block' changes.

What is the biggest challenge of being a mentoree?

Committing yourself to making time for the weekly tasks and activities was a challenge to begin with. The rewards of completing them and being able to apply the knowledge gained in the webinars was definitely worth it though.

What is the most powerful thing you've learned?

That you need to decide where it is you want your business to head. Make that decision, get it clear in your mind and move on it.

What would you say to anyone considering being a mentoree in the MentorNet program?

I would say that there must have been a very good reason you have chosen to leave paid employment to start your own business. Something pretty profound must have led you there. It can be scary and daunting and it is so important to have a support network in place to help you through those tricky stages. There is absolutely something for everyone to learn and grow from by participating in MentorNet.

What was the main benefit of the marketing module in the MentorNet program?

For me, the marketing module really opened my eyes more to the power of a solid marketing plan and approach to my business. It taught me that being proactive and looking to the future needs of my business are vital in order for it to develop and grow. The teachings in the marketing module guided me through the options I have and how to make smarter choices to promote my business and keep in line with my vision.

What changes/improvements did you make to your marketing strategy and tactics as a result of the MentorNet program?

For me, the marketing choices I make are key to the success of my business. I learned that my strategy is to build a brand and that means making the right strategic choices to help me achieve that. I do have a specific target market that I am promoting to and the MentorNet program helped me better define this and the options I have to reach that important customer.

Any additional comments?

I think ultimately the MentorNet program helped me to take my business more seriously. It showed me that I do have the confidence required to make a success of it, I just need to apply some simple yet fundamental rules along the way in order to give myself the best chance possible of reaching my goals.
