Jane Latimer is an Associate Professor and Researcher at both the Sydney Medical School at The University of Sydney and The George Institute for Global Health. Her ground-breaking research into fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) prevalence in remote indigenous communities is the first ever study of its kind.

About Jane Latimer

The George Institute for Global Health

Dr Jane Latimer is an Associate Professor in both the Sydney Medical School at The University of Sydney and The George Institute for Global Health. In 2009, she was awarded an Australian Research Council Future Fellowship, being one of only three physiotherapists in Australia to receive a Future Fellowship that year.

Her research interests include the management of musculoskeletal conditions and, more recently, indigenous health. Jane has obtained over $8 million to fund this research and her work has been published in leading journals. She is part of a team that recently received $1.1million from the Federal Government to fund the first study of FASD prevalence in a remote Indigenous community in Australia. This research is ground breaking and has been described by Australia’s Social Justice Commissioner as "...setting an example to the rest of Australia of how best to approach Indigenous affairs.”� She is married with two children and lives in Sydney.

About The George Institute for Gloabal Health

The George Institute is a medical research organisation committed to undertaking research and identifying practical solutions central to improving the health of people worldwide. Much of this work is focused on those in resource-poor settings.

A/Prof Latimer is working with Aboriginal leaders in the Fitzroy Valley to address the legacy of years of alcohol misuse reflected in the number of children thought to be affected by fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. Her work, together with exceptional Aboriginal women, has resulted in the production of two films, one of which was launched by the Australian Government at the UN in 2009 and the first Australian study to establish the number of children affected by fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.
