Background

After starting her own PR business with one employee, Suzy Yates has gone on to guide her company from strength to strength. In December 2003, a successful merger established Bay Street Mediaworks as an industry leader and in 2004, the company became part of the Photon Group and was listed on the stock exchange on 30th April 2004.

Bay Street Mediaworks now employs eleven full time staff and three consultants and claims an exciting and diverse client portfolio, some of whom have been with Suzy since the company's inception.

Hitting her mid thirties sent Suzy into a panic and she began a fitness regime that has seen her compete in many endurance events including the Sydney Half Marathon, The Hawkesbury Classic 111km Kayak event (twice), numerous long distance ocean swims and hiking the Cradle Mountain Overland Track.

In 2003, she was invited to join (and excitedly accepted) voluntary positions on the Board of both Doggie Rescue and the Australian Business Women's Network. This enables Suzy to indulge her personal passions of saving dogs from death row and assisting women who take the plunge and establish their own businesses.

Suzy was also a finalist in the Telstra Business Women's Awards for 2004

Suzy's Top 5 Recommend Books
1. The Cashflow Quadrant by Robert Kiyosaki
While Rich Dad Poor Dad is the book that put Kiyosaki on the map, as a business owner it was book 2 The Cashflow Quadrant that helped me the most. The book really concentrates on the four quadrants: E= Employee, S: Small Business Owner, B= Business and I= Investor and how you can operate in all 4 quadrants if you like. For employees it outlines ways in which you can start investing, for small businesses owners or consultants there is great advice on building a team to work with you to move into the Business Quadrant. Kiyosaki always give good practical advice and I found the information in this book really does work.
2. Leadership by Rudi Guilliani
When terrorists attacked New York's World Trade Centre on Sept 11, 2001 Mayor Guilliani was in the forefront and showed the people of New York what a real leader he is. Also admired for turning around the crime statistics taking New York from one of the highest crime cities in the world to now one of the safest, Guilliani outlines his broken windows theory (dealing with the small crimes) and zero tolerance. His leadership style is intense, his story remarkable and while I don't agree with everything he says, he is a strong leader with the right mix of compassion and humility.
3. Business as Usual by Anita Roddick
What a brilliant woman and the lessons she imparts are valuable. The book gives an insight into a woman who has built an incredibly successful business and is not afraid to say exactly what she thinks. She protests, she speaks passionately about the evils of big business but most importantly she gives back and is the perfect example of someone who can make a difference to everyone she meets or employs.
4. Rich Kids by Paul Barry
Investigative reporter Paul Barry looks at the aftermath of the One Tel debacle where the telecommunications company went broke leaving thousands of creditors. The main players being some of Australia's most respected (up until now) business people (Jodie Rich, Brad Keeling, James Packer and Lachlan Murdoch). My mouth was open most of the time I was reading, appalled at the total lack of integrity, the lies and the greed of the main players. It is a true story and a must read for anyone who thinks just because someone is rich they are better than the rest. The business ethics displayed by the main players show they only cared about how much money they could rake in for themselves - corporate scum dressed in Armani!
5. Nene by Peter Fitzsimmons
Nene King was the Queen of the wonderful world of women's magazines. As a person working in the media, I have always admired her work.
